Why should you not wear cotton for hiking?

Hiking requires clothing that dries fast and keeping you at your body’s natural temperature. Cotton is in general heavier than competitive synthetic fabrics and because it absorbs so much moisture it gets even heavier when soaked with sweat.
When cotton gets wet, it ceases to insulate you because all of the air pockets in the fabric fill up with water. If the air is colder than your body temperature, you’ll feel cold because your cotton clothing is saturated and no longer providing any insulation.

Merino wool

Merino is a breed of sheep highly prized for its soft and finely crimped wool. From a technical perspective, the diameter of wool is measured in microns. The lower the micron the finer and more expensive it is. Regular coarse wool can be 40 micron or more, but merino is much finer.
It starts at about 24 micron down to 15 micron and below of its thin diameter. Merino isn’t itchy or rough like thicker wools but still offers impressive warmth and moisture wicking capabilities. Merino sheep originally come from Spain. Today, they are most commonly found in Australia, as well raised in the United States, New Zealand, South America, and elsewhere.

What’s the fuss with merino wool?

One of the reasons that merino wool is so popular is its warmth relative to weight. The fabric has a natural loft that traps heat very efficiently between fibers. This makes it warmer than a synthetic of the same weight. You can use merino wool for running, hiking, and mountain biking because it works well across a range of temperatures. In the morning, it’ll keep you reasonably insulated, but you’ll be cool, dry, and ventilated once you start working up a sweat. Another benefit is merino wool’s ability to insulate when wet. As well, merino wool has antibacterial functions thus will prevent bad odour development.

ARE FUNCTIONAL SOCKS REALLY HELPING US IN OUR SPORTS PERFORMANCE?

One usually overlooked yet so important part of the equipment not only for running as well for all sports activities are socks. Yes, the product that you put on in the morning before your shoes. It’s a piece of equipment that is usually marginalised. However, modern sports socks are functional and necessary part of equipment, because we often depend on them to successfully complete the race. Until recently, we all considered sports socks as the one with the word “SPORT” written on them. We thought they should come only in white colour made of 100% cotton. The problem with these socks is when you use you use them for your sports activities, your feet sweat, socks become rough and your skin chafed. his causes blisters and other nasty things which affects your performance.

TEXTILE INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT

Textile and sports industry has come far and cotton is now replaced with synthetic yarns which breathe, lead the moisture away from your skin and keep your feet and body dry. So, as choosing the right shoes for your activity is important so is choosing the right socks. And why is that?

For example, when talking about running socks, they need to be light, breathable, always firmly around the foot and most importantly, prevent excessive sweating that can lead to excessive friction and the appearance of blisters. For instance, no marathon runner wants to give up on his 38th km of the race because of blisters. In fact, it is important that as we get to know our sneakers in which we run, we also get acquainted with running socks. It is important to read characteristics of each model and estimate whether they would suit us or not.
